The RSPB Bempton Cliffs location is certainly a spot that I will visit again. The wide variety of birdlife is a vast, it’s also somewhere that holds a special kind of sea bird, the Atlantic Puffin - it’s fast becoming my favourite bird!
This colourful, clown-like bird is a lot smaller than I expected it to be, only around 20-25cm tall, with their wingspans being around 50 - 60cm’s. It’s true what they say, they stumble and waddle around very similar to clowns and its quite comical to watch. I found myself staring through my long lenses smiling and laughing at their cute but sad eyes for hours!
I think what’s even more incredible is that these birds only come here from around late April and then fly to Northern seas in the late Summer, just sitting there bobbing around like little ‘clowns of the sea’. Sounds like a lot of work to me!
Another reason to visit was to also capture the Northern Gannets. These beautiful and larger birds come in their thousands to Bempton Cliffs, apparently from West Africa.
I wasn’t fortunate enough to see them all go at once to fish in the sea, but I did capture an image of just a small amount of them perched out on a cliff (please see below).
These incredible birds have adapted eyes for diving, oily feathers to allow the water to run off easily and tiny air bags under their skin to help them float back up to the surface… how incredible is that! Although I think the most amazing thing about the Northern Gannets are their vivid blue eyes and golden/yellow feathers. (I’ve included a few close up pictures a below).
All in all, this place was a sight to behold with a few Razorbills hogging the cliffs too! It’s probably best visiting during sunrise and sunset to really get that yellow/golden light capturing the birds on show. However, don’t let an afternoon walk put you off, the cliffs shine and the water sparkles with that high sunlight!
Below I’ve included some very high quality images that I’ve specifically taken and processed for print, please feel free to contact me for pricing, prices start from £40 for the smaller prints. Because of the high resolution of these images, I’m able to have them printed on very large, high quality fine art papers too so please contact me here for more info.
