Equipment is never the answer to good quality images or videography, this is down to many other things, it is just an aid to help create the art and depending on what you are looking to photograph or film, different cameras, lenses and equipment will get different results.

With that said, I’m always asked what equipment I use. So, I thought I would put together a list of some of the more common items I have in my tool bag and a brief explanation as to what I use them for. Please be aware that these are amazon affiliate links. I have sourced these on Amazon as I buy the majority of my gear from here (quick and good value for money). I will receive a very small commission if you buy through these links but this doesn’t effect the price you pay, you’ll just be helping out a creative guy that wants to keep shooting pictures and videos!

Most of the products listed below are what I use on a day to day basis, if you would like to know more about the product photography tools I use in more detail, then please get in touch and I’ll be happy to help.

Sony FX6

Sony FX6

.

Sony FX6 Cinema/documentary Camera

The Sony FX6 is my latest addition to the full frame line up of cameras, enabling me to capture 4k imagery at up to a frame rate of 120fps.

With professional codecs and inputs for audio. A real benefit to this camera is it’s internal electronic variable ND and cache recording - enabling controlled creative shooting and increased likelihood of capturing the action. The FX6 offers professional filming in a relatively lightweight package.

Sony A1

Sony A1

Sony’s flagship camera. A first in mirrorless camera technology to offer 50MP at 30 frames per second shooting for high speed capture. This makes the a1 one of the best cameras available to capture sports, wildlife or fast motion.

The high resolution, 50mp sensor is also able to record up to 8k, up to 120fps at 4k and up to 240fps video in HD. This is an all in one camera that literally does it all!

All in all, this camera is the perfect tool for my three genres of photography; architecture/property, wildlife and sports.

Sony A7siii

Sony A7siii

Sony A7siii. This is my main video/filming camera, it’s a very high quality piece of kit; the higher bit depth and improved colour science makes the camera a little cinematic beast!

Extra features that I’m able to take full advantage of for my clients are; full 4k 120fps as well as full HD at 240fps. The dynamic range is on par with larger cinema cameras, the rolling shutter has been hugely reduced from any other Sony camera. Add to this the colour science changes and the 10bit colour depth, it makes this one of the most anticipated and highly featured run and gun video cameras on the market in 2020!

Best place to order this in the UK (in my opinion) is WEX, customer service has been insanely good!

Sony 400GM f/2.8 Lens

The newest addition to my camera kit line up is what can only be described as one of the best quality lenses I have and is available for the Sony mirrorless system.

At 400mm this is enough reach to use for wildlife and sports photography and produces crystal clear, rich looking images and with its low light capability, I’m able to take make use of this at any time of day.

Sony SEL200-600G F/5.6 - F/6.3 OSS Lens

Put simply, this Sony G lens is my go to lens for capturing wildlife and sports action shots! It’s incredibly sharp and renders the image beautifully capturing all those finer details to make a really clean and crisp image. With a focal range up to 600mm it gets me right up into the action! It’s not cheap, but it’s worth every penny and compliments the 70-200mm lens below.

Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens

The highest quality lens from the GM range of Sony lenses, this is extremely fast at f/2.8 right the way out to 200mm and enables me to capture high frame rate shots at medium distance. The GM lenses are some of the best in the World and are able to capture the detail in high resolution images with ease.

Sony E Mount 1.4x Teleconverter

Exactly what it says on the tin. This Teleconverter extends the reach of my 200-600mm to 840mm for that extra reach! It holds the quality of the G Lens well and is a handy piece of kit to have in the bag!

Sony G 90mm F2.8 Macro G Lens

A macro lens is my main go to lens for product shots. Not only does it render the image very well, it’s also extremely sharp, allowing for full close up details of products like watches and smaller products. Couple this with the Macro’s ability to have 1:1 magnification, products fill the frame entirely without the need to lose resolution through image cropping, bringing the image to life!

Laowa 12mm F/2.8 (manual lens)

Perfect prime lens for property photography/videography. Being a manual lens, you have full control over the aperture and focus. It offers ZERO distortion to keep those lines nice and straight and is sharp even at f/2.8!

Sony G 12-24mm F/4 FE Lens

An alternative to my Laowa lens. This ultra wide angle glass allows me to take advantage of all of those lovely Sony features. Auto focus is very good, although having F/4 means it isn’t the fastest lens out there, the majority of my shots with this are when I need to get wide establishing images where I need auto focus. It’s part of the G Master range so offers slightly better build and glass quality than the usual Sony lenses.

Ronin S Gimbal

Stabilisation can really help when filming and the Ronin S is top notch for this! Not only does it give you great smooth footage, it integrates into the Sony system enabling you to have control over focus and other features, as well as being able to support the weight of some of the larger lenses and external monitors. It’s a great value gimble, not the cheapest, but certainly one of the best for the price.

3 Legged Thing Alan 2.0 Monopod + Docz2 Foot Stabiliser

Perfect Monopod! I’ve tried two before this one and finally I’ve found the one I will use forever (well, I hope so anyway!). This monopod is super secure, has a ball head at the bottom so that you can move the monopod freely whilst still keeping it stabalised. The addition of the Foot stabilisers is also a big help to keep the monopod planted, they fold up easily for carrying and the whole monopod is light enough as it’s made from alumininium - highly recommend it!

Manfrotto 055 Tripod

This comes with me everywhere for property shots and is an essential part of my kit. Like most, I need a reliable and stable tripod that is easy to extend and put away. I own three tripods and this is by far the best. I can use this with the Manfrotto Video head (below) for promotional videos and smooth movements, also for keeping the image completely still when bracketing shots for property photography.

Manfrotto Nitrotech 608 Fluid Video Head

As mentioned above, this video head is remarkably quick to deploy along with the video tripod and has a quick release plate to easily attach/detach the camera. Perfect for those smooth panning shots!

Wacom Intuos Pro Graphic Tablet

Used by many photographers, this tablet will have you wanting to edit more! Yes, you heard that right.. I actually enjoy editing even more with this! Using the pen is more intuitive and feels more natural in comparison to a mouse, it works seamlessly with most photo editing programmes like Lightroom and Photoshop etc, giving you more precise control over where you want your picture adjustments to be. Worth every penny!

Atomos Ninja V Monitor/Recorder

Using an external recorder when filming has huge advantages here are just a few; monitoring exposure, being able to see focus clearly, applying LUTS (Look Up Tables) to footage whilst filming and monitoring colour. Most of all though, the Atoms Ninja V allows you to record on to an SSD card in ProRes 4:2:2 encoding. This has major benefits when it comes to the edit in terms of speed and will save you a lot of time waiting for Premier Pro to decode your footage from a normal camera card or your computers hard drive. Simply take out the SSD card from the back of the Atomos plug it in to your computer and you’re away!

Gitzo Adventury 45L Backpack

The only backpack I need for everything I need to travel with. THere’s plenty of space for two camera bodies, two large lenses (200-600 and the 70-200), I can also fit in a third lens if need be. Lots of storage areas, including a double zipped storage area on one of the sides, can also hold iPad and apple laptop internally. Further storage area that unravels to the desired size for clothes etc at the top. Fully cushioned and supported. Plenty of straps to hold tripod/monopod. Waterproof section that opens and covers the entire backpack. It literally has everything and is super comfortable!
